New Delhi: Commenting on the recent remark on the release of Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman by a Pakistani MP, former Indian Air Force (IAF) chief BS Dhanoa has asserted that Indian forces were ready to attack the forward positions of the Pakistan Army if the IAF officer was not released soon.
"There are two parts to it. The main pressure on Pakistan was diplomatic and political. But there was also a military posture, the way he (Pakistan MP Ayaz Sadiq) is saying that 'his legs (General Bajwa) were shaking and all', it is because the military posture was very offensive of all the three services, Army, Navy, Air Force," Air Chief Marshal BS Dhanoa (retired) was quoted as saying by ANI.
He asserted that the IAF was prepared to attack the forward brigades of the Pakistan Army if the situation had turned even worse.
"And God forbid had they hit our installations on February 27, we were also in a position to wipe out their forward brigades. They know our capability. Basically, if this thing is there in their mind that we are likely to strike, they first look at how their own military is doing. The American President Theodore Roosevelt used to say, 'Speak softly and carry a big stick'. So the big stick was the military," the former IAF chief said.
Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman was part of the IAF effort to foil an attempted attack on Indian military positions by the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) on February 27 last year. The IAF officer had shot down a PAF F-16 before his Mig-21 Bison was shot down on the Pakistan side of the Line of Control (LoC).
Air Chief Marshal BS Dhanoa (retired) also informed that he had promised Abhinandan Varthaman's father that he will ensure that Pakistan released the IAF Wing Commander as quickly as possible. It was a personal mission as well for the then IAF chief because Abhinandan's father had served in the IAF along with him.
"Abhinandan's father and I served together. So, when Abhinandan ejected I told him that we could not get Ahuja back, but will definitely get Abhinandan back. During the Kargil war, my flight commander Ahuja was captured and shot dead. That was playing on my mind. I told him that there are two parts. The main pressure on Pakistan was diplomatic and political. But there was also a military posture," Dhanoa said.
"The way he (Pakistan MP) is saying that 'Pair 'kaanp rahe the' (legs were trembling). It is because the military posture was very offensive... God forbid if there are military misadventure on 27th and hit some of our military installations, we were in a position to wipe out their forward brigades. They know what is our capability," he added.
